"I believe that photography can only reproduce the surface of things. The same applies to a portrait. I take photographs of people the same way I would take photographs of a plaster bust."
When I got admitted at the KABK I was asked why do we photograph people so much and why portraits are so important.
My answer was: I'm wandering the same.
You can make the viewer think you are showing someone's personality through a portrait but
that's not possible. People are complex, you can't show them in a single image. You can show
a concept but not someone.
I think even though you show someone else's face you are also showing yourself in a portrait.
As a maker, it is important to understand that your personal experience or attachments with the subject is not always visible in the portrait.
